Federico Garcia Lorca, Spain's greatest modern poet and playwright, was born June 5, 1898 at Fuentevaqueros in the province of Granada.
Although he had no political affiliations during the Civil War, Lorca was known to be a friend of left-wing intellectuals and an advocate of liberty. Apparently this was enough of an indictment for those Fascists who arrested and murdered him on August 18, 1936.
I once saw a drawing he had made of a sailor, 'El Marinero Del Amor', the sailor of love, a sweet and gently homo-erotic image, and the title has stayed with me.
This picture is dedicated to Federico in admiration and thanks for his poems.
